Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to assist in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, equipment, and components in unified government buildings. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with all HVAC services, calculating heat gains/losses, designing duct units, inspecting HVAC for code compliance, and performing additional tasks as assigned.

When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy.
High school diploma or equivalent with two years of HVAC experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
Six months of supervisory experience is preferred.
Vocational or technical diploma is preferred.
Criminal background must indicate eligibility for the supervision of inmates.
Must obtain security training for the supervision of inmate workers as set forth by the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Operating Procedures within six months of date of hire or first available opportunity.
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Oversees assigned inmates as they perform HVAC tasks.
Assists in inspecting units for defective parts and diagnoses malfunctions; repairs or replaces all system components.
Assists in conducting preventive maintenance checks on electrical controls, bearings, motors, compressors, refrigeration systems, cooling towers, chillers, and pneumatic controls.
Assists in the installation of new and replacement air-conditioning, ventilation and heating systems and equipment.
Assists in calculating heat gain/loss amounts; designing duct systems to install new HVAC equipment and systems using conventional and computerized methods.
Assists in the inspection of heating and air-conditioning equipment for code compliance; performs preventive maintenance for all equipment; maintains related records; files reports for assigned work.
Orders heating and air-conditioning parts and supplies within guidelines of the Athens-Clarke County purchasing policies.
Assists in the connection of unit components and air controls to control panels and power sources; adjusts pressure and vacuum gauges as necessary.
Installs air and water filters in completed work.
Cuts, threads, and joins pipes; tests joints and connections for gas leaks; runs condensation drains for HVAC cooling equipment.
Responds to emergency service requests as a participant in division's on-call program.
Performs other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of the Facilities Management division of the Central Services Department as they pertain to the position of HVAC Technician I.
Knowledge and skill of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools attributable to the HVAC trade.
Knowledge of various air conditioning and heating systems and apparatus.
Knowledge of HVAC, electrical, gas, plumbing, and building codes and regulations.
Knowledge of the terminology used within the division and within the HVAC trade.
Knowledge of and proficient with computers and various spreadsheet and custom HVAC software packages.
Knowledge of blueprints, electrical codes, mechanical designs, and wiring diagrams.
Skill in the use and operation of various construction tools and equipment.
Ability to diagnose and correct heating and air conditioning system problems.
Ability to supervise and train an inmate crew in the construction, maintenance, and repair of air conditioning and heating systems.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, work crews, and other staff members.
Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the division.
Ability to maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information in an effective manner.
Ability to read, understand and interpret personnel and financial reports and related materials.
