HVAC Apprentice / Helper

Position Summary

Assist in the maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; and  perform a variety of preventive maintenance and repair duties within assigned area of responsibility.

Essential and Supplemental Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essentialfunctions may include, but are not limited to the functions listed below. Mustbe able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without areasonable accommodation.

  1. Perform minor repairs to heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; clean filters and replace as needed.
  2. Monitor controls on boilers; check for proper operation of safety devices.
  3. Maintain scheduled lubrication of bearings, pumps, fans and motors; clean or replace packing, bearings, shafts, steam coils and filters as necessary.
  4. Maintain records and files on equipment repairs and inspection activities.
  5. Report and handle operating plant and facility emergencies in accordance with established procedures as necessary.
  6. Perform general maintenance on equipment rooms; paint equipment as necessary to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  7. Locate, check and clean smoke detector heads to ensure reliable operation in time of emergency.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

High school diploma or GED supplemented by thirty (30) credit hours vocational training in boiler and air conditioning maintenance and repair; and

One (1) year of boiler and air conditioning repair and maintenance experience.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by date of hire. 

Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Environmental:
Field environment; exposure to noise, grease, fumes and gases.

Physical:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; operation of motorized equipment and vehicles.
